Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary hosted their 24th annual Special Day for Special Kids on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. (This is our premier event each year) The event is designed to honor and provide a fun day for special needs children and their families. This year set an attendance record of approximately 2,700. Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary is assisted by approximately 150 Service Learning students from the five high schools in the Scottsdale Unified School District, Raising Special Kids, El Puente Rotary Club, and the Red-Nose Interact Club from Saguaro High School. The event provides free train and carousel rides, hot dogs, chips, ice cream, and beverages for all. In addition there are appearances by Ronald McDonald, the Cardinal's Big Red and cheerleaders, Suns Gorilla, Coyotes Howler, Liberty Wildlife, Boy Scouts, Scottsdale Police K-9 Unit, Scottsdale Fire Department, Die- sel Media, and photo / fingerprint IDs for the children by Angie Tait Insurance Group. The Service Learning students set up booths with games and face painting which adds to the fun and enjoyment by all. Food and beverages were donated by Albertson's, Bars-S, Frito-Lay, Bluebell Ice Cream, Reddy Ice, and Gatorade. Baseball hats and sunscreen were donated by BHHS Legacy Foundation and Shade Foundation respectively. The event is funded through a golf tournament and raffle sponsored by Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary, which took place on Friday, April 24th at Silverado Golf Club in Scottsdale. The Club raised approximately $12,000 to offset expenses not covered by the above donations.
