Hello Sunrise Rotarians!

THE GOLF TOURNAMENT IS ONLY 33 DAYS AWAY! The tournament is scheduled at Starfire on Friday, February 26. All members are expected to participate in the fund-raiser either by sponsoring a hole, putting together a golf foursome from outside the club, actively soliciting silent auction/raffle items from area businesses, or selling raffle tickets. Additionally all members are asked to contribute a bottle of good wine in an effort to put together a collection that will bring a high price at the silent auction. The definition of "good" is a wine rated around 90 points by one of the various wine raters. If you're unsure of what to purchase consider asking someone at the wine store or generally a bottle in the $20 range will be a great contribution. It will be fun to see the SSRC wine collection and how much money it brings us in support of Special Day!

After much discussion, the District Governors, District Governors-elect and District Governors-nominee of Rotary Districts 5490 and 5510 (our district) have determined that the interests of both Districts would be best served by a merger. This change would go into effect July 1, 2017 and is dependent on approval by the Rotary International Board of Directors. The primary reasons for the merger are the inability to fill district leadership positions and ongoing membership issues. These conditions exist in both districts. Please contact me if you have questions or concerns about this proposal. The SSRC board will vote yes or no on this at our February 10 meeting.

The program this week is presented by Sophie Etchart of Read Better Be Better. Read Better Be Better is the only nonprofit organization in Arizona that engages youth leaders to help solve the state’s literacy crisis. They train 8th grade students to implement a highly structured after-school curriculum for 3rd grade students considered to be at risk of being kept behind. Their mission is to help children master reading comprehension in 3 ways: improving concentration, encouraging an active enjoyment of reading, and helping develop a deeper understanding of what is being read.
