SSRC - 05/18 Meeting Recap

A couple of quick updates:

First... Speaker Recap!
Our speaker last week was Michelle Grady, who delivered a moving story about her experience as a trauma survivor. What would have been a routine grocery run turned into a horrific day involving a mass shooting.

23 people were killed.

Michelle was shot 4 times.

After undergoing a medically-induced coma, 11 surgeries, re-learning how to walk, use her right hand, and breathe on her own, Michelle is now speaking to others about coping through the unthinkable.

It was a powerful and moving presentation. See a snippet of her story on our Facebook page here.

Second... No meeting this week
We will not have a meeting at McCormick Ranch this week. Instead, we have an opportunity to present one of our Good Morning Great Cause sponsors with a special award signed by Club members.

While we have two awards to give, one of our vendors cannot see us this week.

Please plan to meet us at Zeal Cigars on Thursday morning at 11am. It will be a photo opportunity, so wear your Rotary shirt.

Please see Judy Wilson's service project email for further details.

Third... Carve Roads Through Mountains
As mentioned last week, one of the awards our Club received at District Conference was DG Larry Horton's "Get Your Hands Dirty - Carve Roads Through Mountains" award, which was given for our annual Special Day for Special Kids event.

As I thought through how best to steward that award on behalf of the Club, it seemed fitting to bestow the award upon our SDSK champion, the one person who has been there since the very beginning: David Lewis.

I presented the "Get Your Hands Dirty - Carve Roads Through Mountains" to Dave at last week's meeting. Mayor Dave assisted the presentation.

ASU Rotaract Traveling Trophy Fundraiser
The Rotaract Club of ASU is hosting the third annual Traveling Trophy Fundraiser.

This initiative raises money for the San Tan Rotary Foundation, directing 100% of proceeds to Arizona Veteran Fly Fishing (AVFF), a not-for-profit aligned with Project Phoenix Healing Waters Fly Fishing.

The purpose of AVFF is to help returned veterans recuperate from the difficulties of combat.

This fundraiser is meant to be a friendly competition between participating Rotary Clubs located in Maricopa County. The Rotary Club (Club and/or individual member donations) that donates the most between May 1st and June 30th will win the Traveling Trophy.

We're looking for future Rotarians. Give the gift of Rotary!

Bring a friend who loves to serve! We're always looking for great people to join us in making a difference in our beautiful city.

Yours in Rotary,
