Our first District 5495 Conference combined the previous two Districts of 5490 and 5510 and was held at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona this past June 1-2.  The theme for the conference was, "Pursuing Peace", an event to encourage and equip organizations to pursue peaceful outcomes.  One of the highlights was in the Celebrate Youth session, Jack Woodburn, our SSRC youth exchange student to Austria, gave a nice, "Shout out", to our Scottsdale Sunrise Rotary Club for sponsoring him.  Jack had an awesome year in Austria. Additionally, the ASU Rotoract group gave appreciation for participating in our Special Day for Special Kids (SDSKs) program.  PDG Gary Whiteing from Sun Lakes Rotary spoke of the opportunities to participate in the Navajo water project in NE Arizona which Dave Lewis is heading for SSRC.

Last week we heard from Alan Rodbell, Scottsdale Police Chief.  Chief Rodbell is in his 14th year as Scottsdale Police Chief and has been a frequent visitor to SSRC. Chief Rodbell touched on a number of issues from club members including homeless individuals in Scottsdale, rental bikes and electric scooters, emergence of a new planned shopping along the lines of Kierland in the Pinnacle Peak Road & Scottsdale Road vicinity, and increased traffic in Scottsdale.

We were so sorry to hear from Mike Locker that he is leaving SSRC due to increased responsibilities in his business.  The good news is that Mike has promised to return to SSRC, and wants to continue participation in SSRC projects.  We wish Mike good luck and a speedy return to SSRC.

Our speaker this week is Blessing McCanlis from Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.  We look forward to hearing from our neighbors.

June SSRC board meeting at the Haberer's home (7329 E. Carol Way) at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, June 12th.  All SSRC members are invited.  Please RSVP to Evie Haberer by June 7th.
